Live plants absorb fish waste, fight algae, and make fish feel at home — and these seven grow happily with basic lights and no CO2 injection.

The easy seven

Java Fern — tie to wood or rock (don't bury the rhizome). Nearly unkillable.
Anubias — thick glossy leaves, thrives in shade. Also attaches to hardscape.
Amazon Sword — big background plant; push a root tab into the substrate.
Vallisneria — grass-like runners that quickly fill the back wall.
Water Wisteria — fast grower that soaks up excess nutrients (algae's enemy).
Cryptocoryne wendtii — low, bushy midground plant; may melt on arrival, then regrows stronger.
Marimo Moss Ball — zero effort; just roll it over occasionally.

Rhizome plants (java fern, anubias) must sit on wood/rock — burying the rhizome rots them.
Rooted plants (swords, vallisneria, crypts) want 4–5 cm of substrate and a root tab every few months.
6–8 hours of light daily on a timer. More light without CO2 = algae.
Some melt after transport is normal — trim dead leaves and wait; new growth adapts to your water.
