Bettas are among the most rewarding fish for beginners — hardy, interactive and stunning. But bowls and jars shorten their lives. Here is how to keep a betta thriving for 3–5 years.
Tank size & setup
- Minimum 10 litres, 20 litres is better. Wider is better than taller.
- Gentle filter (bettas dislike strong current) and a lid — they jump.
- Heater set to 26–28°C. Bettas are tropical; cold water causes lethargy and fin rot.
- Soft silk or live plants to rest on. Avoid sharp plastic decor that tears fins.
Feeding
- Quality betta pellets, 2–4 pellets twice a day.
- Treats 1–2× a week: frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp.
- One fasting day per week prevents bloating.
Water care
- Change 25–30% of the water weekly. Always use a water conditioner.

Tank mates
Male bettas must be kept solo or with peaceful bottom dwellers (corydoras, kuhli loaches, snails). Never two males together, and avoid fin-nippers like tiger barbs or colourful guppies that trigger aggression.

With a heated, filtered 10–20 litre tank and good food, bettas live 3–5 years. In bowls, often less than a year.
Males must not be kept with other bettas. Peaceful bottom dwellers like corydoras and snails are usually fine in 40+ litre tanks.
26–28°C. Below 24°C bettas become lethargic and prone to disease, so a heater is recommended in most Indian homes outside summer.
2–4 quality pellets twice daily, with one fasting day per week. Overfeeding is the most common cause of illness.
